“And to a place I come where nothing shines.”
“He who best discerns the worth of time is most distressed whenever time is lost.”
“If you, free as you are of every weight had stayed below, then that would be as strange as living flame on earth remaining still."
With a final glance behind him, the traveler entered
the dark woods.
He knew the sun could not follow, but he’d never known darkness like this. A heaviness he could taste.
A silence that listened.
How far must he go? Who else was here? And worse:
Was he alone?
He was not the first to pass through this place. Some made it through the other side. Others turned back and brought tales of great trials. Still others, he was told, chose to remain among the trees. It was those he feared meeting most.
His only option was to walk, so he did.
In the dark, the direction was not important. It was moving forward that mattered.
The longer he walked, the more trying his journey became. The trail grew steep and the branches grew claws.
The cold crept in at night, which looked no different
from day.
The traveler soon longed for what he’d left behind.
At least he wasn’t alone there. At least he’d known
what lay ahead.
But wait. A faint glow! There, deep in the trees.
If the traveler stepped off his path, he might not find it again.
He walked toward the light.
(the story continues in Room 2)
What was this place?
An expanse far from his woods. Stars that pulsed with shimmering energy. Air like velvet to the touch. A place so beautiful and powerful, he could not feel fear no matter how he searched for it. There was only awe.
The traveler saw his old world, a small orb in the distance.
He saw himself among those gray machines.
His days consumed by small tasks, his minds by passing pain and pleasures. On the machines marched, their wheels and cogs straining to no end.
But was that his world? He had always been a stranger in it.
The grandness carried him along like a slow river.
He no longer needed to walk, so he rested. This place was darker than the last, but it was not his final destination.
Ahead he saw a cord, silvery threads catching the light of a distant moon. He reached for it, wrapped it tight around his hand and pulled.
The cord snapped.
From the darkness, the traveler is thrust into the light.
It is unlike anything he has known. A peace felt with all senses, passing into and through him.
The light illuminates what came before: Those familiar routes in his woods are one path, looping in infinity.
The vast expanse, not so vast now that he’s seen the other side. His first world is faint in the distance. A small star.
Had the traveler not gone through, he would not be here. Had he not strayed from the path, he would have
walked forever.
“All I ever wanted,” the traveler thinks, facing the magnificence before him, “was everything.”
As it turns out, everything was not far away.
He just had to walk toward it.

BEAUTY FOR BEAUTY'S SAKE
“Three Rooms” is a passion project initiated by House of van Schneider (HOVS), a boutique studio intersecting brand and product design. It started when we commissioned Jesperish to paint three pieces of art incorporating the new HOVS identity.
As it happened, we couldn’t stop there. We were so inspired by Jesperish’s art, our entire team came together to create a digital museum for it.
In each room of The House, you will find one of Jesperish’s hand-painted pieces in their native (massive) 10,000 pixel resolution. The rooms are designed and rendered at 40,000 pixel resolution. To make this work seamlessly on the web, each room is split into 18,477 tiny squares, which are dynamically loaded and stitched together like a giant puzzle (thank you, OpenSeaDragon).
We hope you enjoy not only the artwork, but the rooms and stories we’ve created for you. Take your time and explore as much as you can. Come back as often as you like.
Welcome to The House of van Schneider.
INQUIRIES
Why did you create this project?
We created “Three Rooms” because we enjoy building beautiful things solely for beauty’s sake. It takes us back to those early days of the internet, when we explored and experimented purely for pleasure. This is a tribute to that time.
Are you selling the art as NFTs?
No. All art pieces and rooms are exclusively created and owned by HOVS. We do not plan to sell them as NFTs.
Are you going to sell prints?
We may offer limited prints in the future. Please follow @vanschneider on Twitter for updates.
Can I work with you, and where can I find more about HOVS?
Absolutely. We’re always open to new and interesting projects, either of commercial nature or passion projects like this one. To learn more about our work, visit vanschneider.com or reach out to business@vanschneider.com.
